Power Of One

This unit provides eight authentic nonfiction writing lessons to introduce students to global citizenship and the qualities of global citizens.  Designed for grades 4-6 (but adaptable to many grade levels), students will read, write, think and talk their way toward a deep understanding of global citizenship. This literacy unit teaches students invaluable research skills and biography report writing, and is designed to inspire kids to action.  This unit works well following the INRODUCTION TO SURFAID unit, and can be taught in conjunction with the DESTINATION: MENTAWAI ISLANDS geography and science unit and the ECONOMICS OF AID math and social studies unit.

Student-centered lessons are designed to address English-Language Arts Standards, particularly writing skills, as well as non-fiction research and analysis skills. The lessons are presented to build off of one another, but can also be taught independently or incorporated into other learning units.
