Crossing The Divide - Secondary
Through a study of the Mentawai islands, their people and the work of SurfAid, this educational resource provides an exciting opportunity for students to take part in a social inquiry, which promotes both a global perspective to citizenship and the capacity of students to think in a critical and systematic way.
By using the humanitarian achievements of SurfAid as an example of global citizenship, students are able to examine how small groups and individual people can influence and impact on the development of a community with their shared vision and commitment to a purpose. Students are given the chance to engage critically with societal issues and are offered authentic learning opportunities to participate in, and contribute to the global community in which they live.
The resource has been adapted into two separate studies for primary and secondary level students. The studies are supported by a series of PowerPoint Presentations that are included in the download. They are designed for Smart Board use in class with embedded ICT links for students to access information.
Detailed lesson plans provide fact sheets, templates and the primary source material needed for classroom activities.
